City Council Approves Design Concept for Riverwalk Project
On August 4, the St. Helens City Council unanimously approved a design concept for the St. Helens Riverwalk Project. The Riverwalk Project was launched in March 2021 to design public access along the Columbia River starting from Columbia View Park to Plymouth Street and to replace the existing gazebo in the park.
Phase 1, which will be constructed in 2022, includes approximately 300 feet of public access within Columbia View Park. The project will also complete preliminary design for Phase 2 of the riverwalk, which will be a future extension south to Plymouth Street.
The recently approved design concept will be used to create refined drawings for future construction. The design concept incorporated community feedback collected through a Riverwalk survey and public meeting held earlier this year.
Special features of the design concept include:
- Creation of a rocky beach for pedestrian river access
- Creation of a recreation hub at the south end (Plymouth Street end) of the property with a paddle craft launch
- A new multi-purpose pavilion and stage in Columbia View Park designed to preserve views of the river
The August 4 presentation, which includes design concept examples and preferred concept drawings, can be viewed on the Riverwalk Project website at https://www.sthelensoregon.gov/waterfront/page/riverwalk-project. As the design drawings are refined, the City of St. Helens plans to hold future public meetings, including an open house for community feedback.
