ST. HELENS POLICE K-9 AND HANDLER COMPLETE TRAINING

St. Helens, Ore. -  St. Helens Police Department is pleased to announce that K-9 Handler Brent Thompson and K-9 Officer Ryder successfully completed training on December 10, 2016. After passing the 10-week academy held by the Portland Police Bureau, Officer Thompson and K-9 Officer Ryder can now officially go on patrol as a K-9 unit.

Ryder is a purebred German Shepherd that the St. Helens Police Department acquired on August 23, 2016. Before Ryder and Officer Thompson could begin K-9 work together, they were required to attend and pass a 10-week academy which tested Ryder’s workability, obedience, tracking and bite work. Ryder and Officer Thompson were also required to meet all the standards established by the Oregon Police Canine Association (OPCA).

Ryder is the St. Helens Police Department’s fifth K-9 officer. He replaced former K-9 Officer Lycos who retired from service in November 2014. Officer Thompson was hired by the Police Department in December 2013. This is his first time working as a K-9 handler.
