St. Helens Police Host Youth Academy in July

ST. HELENS, OR -- The St. Helens Police Department is hosting a one-day youth academy on Saturday, July 27 for teens interested in learning more about a career in law enforcement.

The academy is for teens ages 16-19 and will be held at the St. Helens High School. The day includes a basic overview of law enforcement topics with a chance for attendees to put their classroom knowledge to the test with hands-on demonstrations and scenarios.

Major topics that will be covered at the academy include an introduction to a career in law enforcement, evidence and fingerprinting, K-9 tracking and demonstration, defensive tactics, patrol cars and basic traffic stops, basic radio codes, reasonable use of force, use of firearms (participants will not be shooting weapons), building searches, and handcuffing.

The day will close with an outdoor barbeque for the participants and their family members at the St. Helens High School. Participants will be able to share and discuss what they learned at the academy with their families and chat one-on-one with St. Helens officers.

There is a $50 fee to attend the academy. Lunch and dinner are provided, and each participant will receive a t-shirt. Pre-registration is required. Application forms are available at the St. Helens police station, 150 S. 13th Street, or online at www.sthelenspolice.org. Applications are due by Friday, July 12.
