St. Helens, Ore. – The Oregon Historical Society will present an original glass lantern slide show on the history of estate gardens in Portland as told through the lens of the Portland Garden Club. The presentation will take place at the St. Helens Public Library on Thursday, June 8 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium, 375 S. 18th Street, St. Helens.

This presentation is in honor of National Garden Week and is co-hosted by the St. Helens Garden Club, St. Helens Public Library and Columbia County Museum Association. The show is free and open to the public.

Suzanne Bishop from the Portland Garden Club will narrate the slide show on the history of twentieth century gardens in Portland. The glass slides used in the presentation were created by George C. Stephenson (1866-1940) on behalf of the Portland Garden Club and were hand-colored. The slides will be screened by Oregon Historical Society Archivist Matthew Cowan using an original lantern slide projector. Many of the slides document famed historical Portland gardens, including the Kerr gardens and the Frank and Meier Estates.

The Oregon Historical Society is dedicated to making Oregon's long, rich history visible and accessible to all. For more than a century, the Oregon Historical Society has served as the state's collective memory, preserving a vast collection of artifacts, photographs, maps, manuscript materials, books, films, and oral histories. Their research library, museum, digital platform, educational programming, and historical journal make Oregon's history open and accessible to all. They exist because history is powerful, and because a history as deep and rich as Oregon's cannot be contained within a single story or point of view.
