St. Helens, Ore. – Warrenton author John Rekart, Jr., will share his stories about current and historical Columbia River pilots, sailors, and tug-and-barge operations at the St. Helens Public Library on Thursday, April 27 at 7 p.m.

Rekart is the author of “Rollin’ on the Wild River: The stories of the sagebrush sailors and tug-and-barge operations on the wild Columbia River” and “Rollin’ on the River: Columbia River pilots – river tales, history & commerce.” His books share the stories of current and former Columbia River pilots, several of whom started working when only one dam existed on the Columbia River. Rekart spent time interviewing tug captains, engineers and crewman who shared memories from working along the lower river, the wilder areas of the middle and upper Columbia River, and up the Snake River.

Rekart also explores how the professional skills of Columbia River workers impact commerce around the world and how their services are an integral link between truck drivers, railroad employees, grain silo workers, warehousemen and longshoremen.
