Engineers Week - Ongoing and Completed Projects. Two images of in-progress projects

It’s National Engineers Week! Today’s Engineers Week highlight includes some of the ongoing projects that the Engineering Department is working on, as well as recently completed projects. While there are always several projects in process, they reach important milestones every day.

The North Vernonia Road Sidewalk Improvements Project is in the process of bringing sidewalks, permanent speed radar signs, pedestrian crossing signals, and improved drainage from Oakwood Drive to MacArthur Street. These changes are bringing long-needed improvements to the area. Work on the North Vernonia Road Sidewalk Improvement Project is rapidly approaching its completion, which is expected before the end of April.

Other projects include updating the Water Master Plan, overseeing the extension of South 1st and Strand Streets, managing the upgrade of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System at the Water Filtration Facility, overseeing a grant-funded project to install a new sidewalk on Columbia Boulevard between Gable and Sykes Roads, assisting with procurement and installation of new playground equipment at McCormick Park, and assisting with the construction of new sport courts and parking lot expansion in Campbell Park.

Completed projects are the result of hundreds of hours of work on the ground and behind the scenes. Regardless of the size, visibility, and duration, the Engineering Department has a role every step of the way.

This past fall, the City completed the North 7th, North 9th, & North 11th Street Waterline Improvement Project. The Engineering Department designed and oversaw the construction of the $300k project which installed over 1,700 linear feet of iron water pipe to replace the aged and undersized waterlines on North 11th Street from Deer Island Road to West Street, and on North 9th and North 7th Streets from West Street to Wyeth Street. As part of the project, new fire hydrants and water valves were installed, and a 48-inch diameter arched culvert was installed at North 11th Street connecting the last remaining section of the open ditch to existing culverts.

More projects are on the way, and Engineering has plenty of work still to do. Before looking forward to what’s on the horizon, it’s important to recognize the successes along the way.
