Engineers Week - Meet The St. Helens Engineering Department

Meet our Engineering Department - Sharon Darroux, Sue Nelson, and Tim Underwood

The City of St. Helens Engineering Department is made up of three staff members. This small crew is responsible for numerous projects throughout the city.  But who are they?

City Engineer Sue Nelson’s time at the City began in 2001 as a Civil Engineer. Through the years she has moved from Civil Engineer to Engineering Supervisor in 2004, to City Engineer in 2020. In that time, she also served as Interim Public Works Co-Director in 2012 and Interim Public Works Director in 2019. Sue recently earned her City Engineer designation. This past January she was recognized for 20 years of service to the City of St. Helens.

Engineering Project Manager I Sharon Darroux was hired by the City in 2009 to coordinate the City’s Lateral Rehab Program as a part-time, term-limited employee. In 2012 she was hired as an Engineering Technician, then reclassified to Engineering Project Manager in 2015. Recently she was named as a 2020 Employee of the Year! Her nomination noted her creation of a roadway database to track problem areas in the city, her skill with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and participation in the City’s Wellness Program.

Construction Inspector Tim Underwood began working for the City in 1999 as an Engineering Technician.  After many years working as a Technician, the City needed an inspector for its numerous construction projects. In January 2011, Tim was designated as the City’s Construction Inspector where he currently serves. Tim was recognized for 20 years of service to the City of St. Helens in 2019.

This March, Sue and Sharon will present on the City’s successful Sewer Lateral Rehabilitation Program at the Water Environment School. The success of the Sewer Lateral Replacement Program has inspired many local and non-local communities to reach out to us in order to find out more about our Program. They have presented on the topic on several occasions, including at the Oregon American Public Works Association (APWA) Water Resources Group, the Oregon APWA Spring Chapter Conference, and the Pacific Northwest Clean Water Association Annual Conference.

Thank you to Sue, Sharon, and Tim for all the work you do for the city. Your work has been invaluable and its impact is felt both here in St. Helens and outside the city.
