2022 Summer Street Paving Project Wraps Up

Construction equipment working on Old Portland Road paving overlay

Did your drive on Old Portland Road or McBride Street just get a lot smoother? The City of St. Helens recently completed a summer paving overlay and patching project!

Our Public Works Department routinely inspects city streets and tracks pavement conditions and distresses. Streets are chosen for paving and patch work based on numerous factors: street condition, classification, coordination with other utility and roadway projects, and current and projected budget.

This summer (2022), portions of five streets were identified for a full pavement overlay:

  • Old Portland Rd from Port Ave to 100 feet west of the Old Portland Road Bridge
  • Milton Way from Columbia Boulevard to Dubois Lane
  • McBride Street from Matzen Street to Maplewood Drive
  • The first 350 feet of North 7th Street at Columbia Boulevard
  • Ogan Lane at Columbia Boulevard

In addition to the paving overlays, asphalt patching was completed on over 15 streets.

The City contracted with TFT Construction, Inc. based in Scappoose to perform the work.

What about your street?

The City’s Engineering Department keeps a database of city streets to track road maintenance projects. Streets are chosen for repair and maintenance projects based on the street’s category (high use versus low use), the severity of repair work needed, condition of the utilities below the road, etc.

High-traffic roads are ranked higher for project work, but we realize that this often leaves local residential streets without paving maintenance for many years. To begin addressing this issue, the St. Helens Engineering Department decided to include at least three local streets in this year’s summer paving work. The goal is to continue including one or two local streets each time there is a citywide paving project.

If you have questions about a specific street, you can email our Engineering staff at engineering@sthelensoregon.gov.
