City Welcomes New Building Inspector

Heashot of St. Helens Building Inspector John Hicks

Did you know that our St. Helens Building Department has one building official? He is responsible for completing all of our building permit plan reviews and inspection requests himself.

From July to December 2020, he was responsible for:

  • Completing an average of 85 inspections per week. This requires going to each job site to review the construction work and make sure it meets Oregon Building Code standards
  • Approving 324 building permit applications
  • Completing 232 plan reviews for building permit applications that could not be issued directly over the counter

To assist with this workload, we are pleased to welcome John Hicks to the St. Helens Building Department team as our new building inspector. He will assist our Building Official Mike DeRoia by conducting inspection requests. John was a building inspector at the City of Forest Grove for a year before accepting a job with the City of St. Helens. Before that, he was a construction superintendent for three different companies for 20 years. John has certifications as a residential structural and mechanical inspector and can perform residential plan review. Welcome, John!
