Former Planning Commissioner Greg Cohen Acknowledged for 18 Years of Service

Mayor Scholl Presenting Greg Cohen with Plaque During Zoom City Council Work Session

At Wednesday’s City Council Work Session, Mayor Rick Scholl presented former Planning Commissioner Greg Cohen with a plaque commemorating 18 years of service to the City.

At the January 12, 2021 Planning Commission meeting, Cohen said that back in 2002 he “never expected to serve more than one term as a member of the Planning Commission.” In the 18 years since, despite the occasional disagreement or two, Cohen prides the Commission on its ability to work collectively and find solutions to any problems put before it.

During Cohen’s tenure his experience made him a leader and a guide, even when not serving as chair or vice-chair. He arrived at every meeting having studied each detail, ready to make sure that each factor was being considered in each decision – even if it meant playing devil’s advocate. Precedence and integrity were of prime concern to Cohen, and he wanted to be sure that the City was never lead down the wrong path.

Cohen says he is proud of the Commission’s record of being upheld when its decisions were brought to appeal. He also expressed pride in the City’s professional planning staff for their longevity and skill, and acknowledged the number of Planning Department staff who have moved on to higher positions within City government.

City staff members who previously worked with Cohen as part of the Planning Commission expressed admiration and gratitude for his kindness, and for the time he took to get to know those he worked with. Cohen’s work with the Commission sets a precedence of accomplishment and dedication for all those that continue to serve as part of the Commission, and those who will serve in the future.

During Wednesday's City Council Work Session, Cohen reflected on his time on the Commission: “I appreciate the opportunity to serve the citizens of the City all these years on the Planning Commission, it’s been an honor and a privilege. I’ve seen a lot of changes.”

Greg Cohen’s 18 years at the City have left a lasting mark and a glowing legacy. The City is grateful for his service, and looks forward to continuing under the guidance he has left through the Planning Commission.
