City of St. Helens Employees Recognized For Length of Service
During Wednesday’s City Council Work Session, the Council presented two employees with Length of Service awards. Human Resources Coordinator/City Recorder Kathy Payne was recognized for 20 years of service with the City of St. Helens and Youth Librarian Gretchen Kolderup was recognized for five years of service with the City.
Kathy Payne began working for the City in April of 2001 as the Planning Secretary. In 2008 she took over the duties of City Recorder and was reclassified to that position, where she has served ever since. This past February, the title “Human Resources Coordinator” was added to reflect the number of Human Resources duties included in her position.
During Wednesday’s Work Session, City Council President Doug Morten described Kathy as solid, knowledgeable, reliable, and trustworthy; "Kathy Payne, you are the anchor of the city." Morten, echoed by other councilors, expressed gratitude for her wealth of experience. Several participants called her an asset to the City and thanked her for being someone that they could come to when seeking answers to any problem.
Gretchen Kolderup joined the St. Helens Public Library in 2016 as the Youth Librarian. Many young library patrons know “Miss Gretchen” for her storytimes with rhymes, songs, stories, and "cool puppet voices" (so says Library Director Margaret Jeffries). Gretchen has built a deep connection to the community through her outreach to Head Start, the schools, and the Recreation Program. She has brought an emphasis on inclusive programming, STEM-based education, and diverse collection policies to the Library.
During the Work Session, Councilor Topaz commended Kolderup for the number of new programs she has brought to the library in her five years. He cited new programs for young children, work towards the upcoming Makerspace, and her ability to make connections between the library and community groups. “There’s one creative person with a lot of creative programs,” he said in summary.
