Successful Donut Day Supports Food Bank

St. Helens, Ore. - A successful effort by the St. Helens Police Department to collect food for the Columbia Pacific Food Bank was held over the weekend. The fifteenth annual Donut Day celebration allowed citizens to trade canned food or cash for Krispy Kreme donuts on Saturday, December 9. At the end of the day, 3,700 pounds of food and over $2,100 was collected.
Officer Santa Claus was a popular addition to the celebration. Officer Claus was sworn in as an honorary patrol officer for the St. Helens Police Department at the St. Helens City Council’s December 6 meeting. His work for the Department is being chronicled on their Facebook page, Twitter account, and online at www.ci.st-helens.or.us/police.
Officer Claus was joined at Donut Day by Mrs. Claus and the Abominable Snowman. At least 200 children showed up to share their Christmas wishes and pose for photographs. KOHI AM 1600 broadcasted live from the event, Dutch Bros. Coffee offered coffee and hot chocolate, and the St. Helens High School choir and River City Singers provided live music at different times during the day.
“Supporting the Columbia Pacific Food Bank is important to us,” said Chief Terry Moss. “To hold an event like this, and have this much fun, makes it extra special.”
Over the years, Donut Day has resulted in an excess of 50,000 pounds of food and over $40,000 in donations for the Columbia Pacific Food Bank.
