Freezing Pipes & Cold Weather
FREEZING PIPES & COLD WEATHER
We have received several phone calls from people without water. The Water Department is not conducting shut offs right now. Due to the prolonged freezing temperatures, your water pipes have likely frozen if you turn your faucet on and no water comes out.
Below are a few helpful tips from the St. Helens Public Works Department regarding frozen pipes:
- Consider leaving a kitchen faucet dripping. This allows water to continue to flow through pipes and helps prevent freezing. This may increase your water bill by a few dollars, but it is an easy way to prevent frozen pipes and ensure that you continue to have water.
- If you have indoor plumbing that runs along an outside wall of your house, open the corresponding kitchen or bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the pipes. Make sure any harmful chemicals and cleaners that you store in these cabinets are secured out of the reach of children and pets.
- If your water pipes have frozen, leave a bathroom valve or kitchen faucet cracked open as your pipes unthaw so that the expanding water pressure does not burst your water pipes.
- If you discover a broken pipe due to freezing water and do not have a shut off valve on your side of the water meter, please call our Public Works Department to turn your meter off. During business hours, call City Hall at 503-397-6272. After hours, call non-emergency dispatch at 503-397-1521. A Public Works employee will be dispatched to turn your meter off.
