ST. HELENS WELCOMES NEW K-9 OFFICER TO POLICE DEPARTMENT

On August 23, St. Helens Police Department welcomed its newest officer to the force: 17-month-old K-9 Officer Ryder.

Ryder is a purebred German Shepherd being handled by St. Helens Police Officer Brent Thompson. Ryder is the Police Department’s fifth K-9 Officer, replacing former K-9 Officer Lycos who retired from service in November 2014. This is Officer Thompson’s first time working as a K-9 handler.

Born in Hungary, the Police Department acquired Ryder through Vohne Liche Kennels West in California. Ryder comes to St. Helens with some training in bite work using a sleeve.

In October 2016, Ryder and K-9 Handler Thompson will attend a 10-week academy in Portland to test Ryder’s workability, obedience, tracking and bite work. If all testing and training goes according to plan, Ryder will pass his standards and be approved to start work by late 2016.
