Serving as an elected official certainly requires a significant time commitment but is extremely rewarding and enriching.  The decisions of the officials produce long-term, qualitative affects upon the community.  Should you or someone you know be interested in running for City Council, there are a couple requirements you should be aware of:

  • Registered to vote in Oregon.
  • Must have resided in the city limits of the City of St. Helens during the 12 months immediately preceding the election.

Candidate packets are now available by clicking here or you may pick up a binder from City Elections Official Kathy Payne at City Hall, 265 Strand Street, St. Helens.  Candidates may file by declaration or by petition.

Option 1 – Candidates Filing by Declaration

Per City of St. Helens Municipal Code, you have the option of filing a $50.00 fee in lieu of obtaining signatures on a petition.

Option 2 – Candidates Filing by Petition

Petition form must be approved by the City Elections Official before you begin to gather signatures.  After your petition is approved, the City Elections Officer will return the form to you to start the gathering of signatures.  St. Helens candidates must collect 43 valid signatures to place a candidate on the ballot.

All required forms must be properly completed and returned to Kathy Payne, City Recorder, at St. Helens City Hall no later than 5:00 p.m. on August 15, 2014.
