A number of land uses require a visit to the Planning Dept., in addition to obtaining a building permit, to ensure that your project is in compliance with the City's Community Development Code.  For example, applications may be required if you want to put up a fence or an accessory structure (e.g. a garage or garden shed) or add onto your house.  In addition, other land use actions, such as temporary use of a parking lot (like a carnival or crafts booths), signs to publicize a fundraiser, or starting a small business in your home (e.g., home office for a general contractor) require a review. Applications and fees are required for some uses.

The Planning Department is responsible for current and long-range land use planning for the City. The Department provides staff support to the City Council, Planning Commission, Citizen's Advisory Committee and others.  Additionally, the Department is responsible for the interpretation and enforcement of the Comprehensive Plan and implementing ordinance (Community Development Code).

Comprehensive Plan amendments, zone changes, subdivisions, partitions, lot line adjustments, annexations, conditional use permits, variances, signs, temporary use permits, home occupations, and site development reviews are processed through this Department.
